Radcliffe Bailey is an Atlanta native, which is why I chose him as one of my artists. I wouldn’t necessarily say that Bailey is an emerging artist; however, he is not a well established artist either. Bailey described that “he had always liked to draw” in a biography that I read. In 2003, Bailey began to make what he called “medicine cabinet sculptures” which are a combination of paintings and sculptures. Bailey’s art is about mystery and the history of mystery. However, Bailey’s art is influenced by family members, by my mother, my children, and my grandparents. Bailey’s mother is the one that introduced him to museums at a young age. 7 Steps (pictured below) is one of my favorite Radcliffe pieces – I love the layering and different elements. The ladder almost makes me feel like the 7 steps are to get to Heaven or some other higher place.
