ARED 3050 Chase Street Lesson Plan Template

Group Members: Hannah, Kendall, & Kala

Project title: Spring Has Sprung Target grade level: 1st grade

Project Theme or Big Idea:

Our Project theme is seasons. The big idea is what happens during spring with flowers, vegetation, and animals.

Objectives (What do you hope the students will gain or explore):

The children will explore the elements of spring – like how flowers bloom, what happens with vegetation, ect.

Then students will engage in activity related to the lesson to evoke creativity.

Student Materials (list of supplies students will need to complete the project, list EVERYTHING):

Paint (liquid watercolors)

Pipe cleaners

Scissors

Tissue paper

Styrofoam cups

Glue

Coffee filters

Eyedroppers

Wax paper

Plastic cups

Tempra/acrylic paint

Teacher Materials (What will you need in addition to student materials in order to teach the lesson eg. Samples, images, templates):

Book about Spring (Let’s Look at Spring) Story Time with Erin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHHo12HS_fw

Example

Intro (how will you begin the experience; what questions will you ask to guide the lesson? What if any resources will you show):

Does anyone know when the first day of spring is? (March 20)

What season were we just in?

Use the Story Time With Erin Youtube video if possible

Today, well be making our own flower garden, why do you think flowers are significant?

Procedures (how will you guide the experience? What activities will students engage in? How will you teach technical skills as well as lesson themes? How much time will each activity take?):

Procedures: discuss what materials are going to be used for, talk about dropping the paint, hand out materials

Students will engage in making flower gardens after learning about spring.

Students will Story Time with Erin about Spring, materials will be passed about during this time. (10 minutes)

Fist students will paint their pots - that will hold their flowers with acrylic paint or tempra paint, after Story Time with Erin. (10 minutes)

After painting pots, students will cut out flowers using the coffee filters. (5 Minutes)

Students will use liquid paint and droppers to explore color mixing. (10 minutes)

Students will let coffee filters dry, and cut their stems out of pipe cleaners. (5 minutes)

Students will attach flowers to stems with tape. (5 Minutes)

Students will stick stems through flower pots. (5 Minutes)

50 minutes for lesson – 10 minutes for clean up.

Closure (how will you bring the experience to an end):

Combine the individual gardens to create a large flower garden. Let students do a walk around the large garden, then let students dissemble the garden to take their individual flower garden.

Evaluation (how will you measure your success and identify changes that need to be made for next time:

No matter how chaotic – if the students learned and had a good time, I cant complain.

Clean-up (How will you facilitate clean-up with the students?):

Students will clean up space, but we will be using wax paper to alleviate the mess of paint and water. Make sure the entire area looks as it did when we entered.

Post-lesson Reflection (How did it go?)

I was very disappointed with the way that things went for our first lesson at Chase Street. I feel like I did a majority of the work, because no one else in my group really did their part in terms of instruction. I started off by reading the book that we agreed upon; however, after passing the materials out – my other group members did not give instructions like we planned. The students were very confused about the steps to making the flower gardens – there were no step by step instructions. The students were confused by which materials to use for which part of the activity, because nothing was explained to them. I believe that my group and I could have worked together a little better – because we did not function together as a group.
