Project title: Monsters go to school Target grade level: 1st grade
Project Theme or Big Idea:
Monsters go to school. Telling a story about their monsters.
Objectives (What do you hope the students will gain or explore):
Creative imagination.
The student will be able to make a 3D model of their very own technological invention.
Students will explore multiple forms of media including: construction paper, markers, paper plates, paper bags, and popsicle sticks.
Students will learn about the design process by sketching and creating models as part of the brainstorming and creation stages.
Student Materials (list of supplies students will need to complete the project, list EVERYTHING):
Paper plates
Paper bags
Popsicle sticks
Glue
Paint markers
Google eyes
Construction paper
Pencils
Scissors
Story templates
Teacher Materials (What will you need in addition to student materials in order to teach the lesson eg. Samples, images, templates):
Samples of each the paper plate and paper bags
Intro (how will you begin the experience; what questions will you ask to guide the lesson? What if any resources will you show):
-Read a book: “Monsters Love School”.
-Discuss creativity and that monsters are silly creatures
Procedures (how will you guide the experience? What activities will students engage in? How will you teach technical skills as well as lesson themes? How much time will each activity take?):
-We will introduce ourselves
-Kala: bring kids to carpet and read( discuss that we have to use our imagination to create our own monster)
-Kendall & Hannah: redirect them to their seats and explain and show examples of the monsters
-discuss the materials that we will use
-discuss that you have to use a little paint to coat your paper plate or monster because the paint needs time to dry.
-at the end the students will write a few sentences about their monster by using the template provided by the teachers.
Closure (how will you bring the experience to an end):
-the students will share their monsters and their short story that they attach to their monsters.
Evaluation (how will you measure your success and identify changes that need to be made for next time):
If students learned and had fun, I will have no complaints about the chaos.
Clean-up (How will you facilitate clean-up with the students?):
-Have them help clean up and throw away trash.
Post-lesson Reflection (How did it go?)
The second lesson at Chase Street went so much better than the first! The kids really enjoyed being creative, and making their own monsters. The story writing process seemed a bit challenging for some students, but they were all really great! I believe less materials makes a lesson go a lot smoother.
