Many art concepts are discussed in Chapter 4 of The Story in the Picture like lines, color, and three dimensional work. In relation to early childhood cirriculum, lines are the best place to start with young children, basically the foundation of art concepts. Lines then turn into shapes and variations of lines like zig zag or curly. Children are often intrigued by color. The best way for children to understand colors is by exploring and discovering, like mixing colors. Teachers forcing the activity of mixing colors is essentially controlled, which is unnatural. The process of colors is the exploring and discovery. Three dimensional work is another great concept of art for children to learn through. Clay and wood are the most discussed in Chapter 4, but cardboard boxes, paper, wire, beads, and found objects are all possible sources. Clay is a great avenue, because children have so many options. Clay can be broken apart, put back together, or scult a teapot- the possibilites are endless.
