"But observing goes beyond looking and means moving beyond habitutal ways of seeing." The way that many view arts is just by looking, not observing. As educators, we want students to move beyond their habitual ways of seeing, not only in art education, but also in general education. The tools used in art education can be applied in general education, like the viewfinder. The viewfinder in art education is referred to as "helping students to see objects as only lines, shapes, and colors in a frame." A hypothetical or literal viewfinder can be used in general education by helping students focus on the smaller aspects of a lesson until the entire concept is understood. Many students need to focus on what they actually see rather than the "bigger picture" in art and general education. Before I read the Observe chapter, I did not really believe that there was much correlation between art eduaction and general cirrculum. Now, I realize that art and general education are actually similar in many aspects - particularly the viewfinder tool described in this reading.
